Diversions on Stockalperweg

Due to current weather conditions, there may be closures and diversions on the hiking trails. On this page, you will find information on the condition of the Stockalperweg and any diversions.

«Bachtschugge» diversion

The first stage of the Stockalper Trail runs from Schallberg along the historically restored “Talweg Ganter” through the Ganter Valley towards Rothwald. Above Mittubäch, the route leads into the Tafernatal valley and on to the Simplon Pass.

The original section via “Grund” is closed indefinitely due to an acute risk of rockfall.

All hikers heading for the Simplon Pass are urged to follow the orange diversion signs from Schallberg and not to descend into “Grund”.

The walking times apply when travelling by PostBus to the first location listed:

*Brig – Schallberg – Talweg Ganter – Rothwald – Simplon Pass
19.4 km / 7 hrs / 1,677 m ascent / 364 m descent

*Schallberg – Ganter valley – Rothwald – Simplon Pass
14 km / 5 hrs / 1,081 m ascent / 374 m descent

*Eisten, Ganter Bridge – Rothwald – Simplon Pass
9.5 km / 3.5 hrs / 826 m ascent / 296 m descent

*Rothwald, mountain hut – Simplon Pass
5.1 km / 2 hrs / 469 m ascent / 212 m descent

«Engi»diversion

In the “Engi” area, rainfall causes rocks and scree to come loose, triggering small to medium-sized debris flows. These can reach the A-road and the footpath. For this reason, the section from “Engeloch” to “Maschihuis” is closed to walkers during rainfall. Please observe the signage and information provided on site.

We suggest the following alternatives:

Hiking option

Start the hike at the Simplon Pass and follow the Stockalperweg to the bridge towards ‘Chluismatta’. Cross the bridge and follow the road for a few metres. Passing the houses, take the footpath to ‘d’Stelli’. A few minutes before the hamlet of ‘Egga’, turn back onto the Stockalperweg to reach Simplon village.

PostBus option (if the pass road is open)

Walk along the Stockalperweg from the Simplon Pass to ‘Engeloch’. The «Engeloch» PostBus stop is just a few metres from the footpath. Take the PostBus one stop further and get off at ‘Maschihüs’. The Stockalperweg runs just a few metres from the stop.
