Trailrunning routes Brig – Domodossola

When trail running on the Simplon Pass in the Valais, you have various routes to choose from. Jog along the historic Stockalperweg, climb peaks and enjoy the views at beautiful locations.

Arrival in Brig

Get in the mood for the tour with the guided tour of Stockalper Castle.

Stage 1: Brig – Simplon Village

From the Alpine town of Brig over the Simplon Pass to the charming village of Simplon

Brig - Nanztal - Simplon Dorf

The trail running experience begins in Brig. In the first stage, around 1,800 metres of altitude are covered. The trail leads from Brig via Holzji into the Nanztal. On the left side of the Nanztal, the trail leads almost to the end of the valley. At the Sirwoltesattel the highest point is reached and the descent to Simplon Dorf begins. From Engeloch you walk along the Stockalperweg before reaching the village.

Brig - Wasenalp - Simplon Dorf

The start of the route is classic on the Stockalperweg. In Schallberg you walk along the Gantertal valley until you are under the Ganter bridge, here the ascent begins to Berisal and finally to Wasenalp. Now the easier part of the stage begins. You walk towards the Simplon Pass and rejoin the Stockalperweg to reach Simplon Dorf.

Brig - Simplon Dorf (Stockalpertrail)

You set off from the old town of Brig, where you take the so-called Römerweg to reach the Lingwurm. The route continues in a zigzag pattern to Schallberg and, via the historically restored ‘Talweg Ganter’, through the Ganter Valley towards Rothwald. Above Mittubäch, the route leads into the Tafernatal valley. Here begins the ascent through the tranquil Tafernatal valley towards the Simplon Pass. When you catch sight of the Simplon Eagle, you have reached the highest point of the stage. Now follows an easy descent through woods and meadows to the village of Simplon.

Stage 2: Simplon Dorf – Bognanco (I)

From Simplon Dorf, past the Laggin Valley, through the Zwischbergen Valley along old smugglers’ routes to Italy. Here are a few route suggestions.

Simplon Dorf - Furggu - Bognanco

The Stockalper Trail climbs on narrow hairpin bends towards Furggu up to the wayside chapel at Chrizji. The steep descent from Furggu through larch forests to the hamlet of “Chatzhalte” becomes flatter as you approach the Sera reservoir. Over hundreds of natural steps, the trail leads up to the Monscerapass, the national border. Once on the Italian side, the descent begins to the scattered village of Bognanco.

For summit strikers:

For an extra challenge, choose the trail via Furggu and conquer the Seehorn (2,439 m.a.s.l.) from there. After the descent, continue towards the Sera reservoir to the national border on the Monscerapass.

Simplon Dorf - Gondo - Bognanco

Walk through the impressive Gondo Gorge, past the Old Barracks, 350 metres through the tunnels of the Fort Gondo infantry fortress and finally reach the border village of Gondo. The trail then climbs steeply up through the Zwischbergental valley to the Sera reservoir. Over a hundred natural steps, the trail leads up to the Monscere Pass, the national border. In Italy, the descent begins to the scattered village of Bognanco.

3rd part: Bognanco – Domodossola

Along the scattered village of Bognanco, follow the course of the valley to Domodossola.

Bognanco - Alpe Foppiano - Domodossola

Up to the oratory of Dagliano, the path is the same as the classic variant. The trail continues uphill towards Alpe Foppiano. After about 500 metres in altitude, you reach the Oratorio di San Bernardo and begin the descent to Domodossola. Shortly before Domodossola you reach the square of the Sacro Monte Calvario. Via Crucis leads you down to Domodossola and in a short time you reach the historic centre and the railway station.

Bognanco - Domodossola (Stockalperweg)

At the end of the village of Bognanco Fonti, take the path towards Monsignore. The path first climbs up the hill and then descends steeply to a stream, which you cross over a spectacular stone bridge and soon climb to the wayside church, the Oratory of Dagliano. Continue along a beautiful mule track to Monteossolano. You continue briefly on an asphalt path until you reach Pregliasca and finally through the woods and over a bridge to Castanedo. Now the trail leads past many chapels and wayside shrines to Vagna. At the end of this stage, via Croppo, you reach the square of the Sacro Monte Calvario, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Via Crucis leads down to Domodossola and in a short time you reach the historic centre and the railway station.

Departure from Domodossola

Enjoy a café in the Piazza Mercato and stroll through the Piedmontese town of Domodossola before travelling home.
