Hiking Holidays Brig – Gondo

Hiking: Stockalperweg

ViaStockalper Package 3 Nights

More than 300 years ago, the former bridle path over the Simplon was developed by Kaspar Stockalper, but it has long since given up its economic importance to newer roads. For a few years now, it has been revived as a cultural hiking route.

In three daily stages, the mule track leads from Brig to the Simplon Pass and to Gondo. Experience the diversity of the Stockalper Trail: extensive larch forests, flowering alpine roses, herds of cows, lonely valleys, rushing mountain streams, the national road… You travel with a daypack, your luggage is transported for you from accommodation to accommodation.

Hike & Daily Schedule

  • Day 1

    Arrival

Individual journey to Brig. Discover the Alpine town of Brig and pay a visit to the baroque Stockalper Castle.

  • Day 2

    Brig - Simplonpass

Hike via Ried-Brig to “Schallberg” and descent to the hamlet of “Grund”. From here the Stockalper trail follows the wild Tafernabach stream to the ruins of the former inn. Take a short breather before tackling the final ascent towards the Simplon Pass.

Option light: Save yourself around 600 metres in altitude and take the post bus to “Schallberg” (or also to Taferna). The post bus ticket is included in the price.

  • Day 3

    Simplonpass - Simplon Dorf

Short descent to the “Gampisch” plain. You then pass numerous animals and rustic stone huts until Simplon Dorf appears in sight. Don’t miss a visit to the Ecomuseum in the “alten Gasthaus” (old inn) and a short detour to the “Arnold” bakery, which makes the famous “Simpilär rye bread” from sourdough, and the Simplon alpine dairy.

  • Day 4

    Simplon Dorf - Gondo

After the descent to the “Gabi”, you have the choice – the stage destination Gondo can be reached in two different ways.

Variant Gondo Canyon: Hike over footbridges and bridges through the impressive Gondo Gorge. You walk about 350m through the fortress “Fort Gondo” before you leave the gorge and reach Gondo on the left side of the valley.

Furggu variant: From Gabi, the trail climbs steadily towards Furggu. Once at “Furggu”, the descent begins into the Zwischbergental valley to the hamlet of “Bord” and on down to the border village of Gondo. Stage description
